You can’t Educate Everyone Because Someone has to do the Shit Jobs

Yes, this is one of the many things I learned from Dartmouth College. No, Dartmouth college didn´t have a class on this subject in the Economics Department. No, Dartmouth College didn’t have banners posted around the campus with this slogan. “You can’t Educate Everyone Because Someone has to do the Shit Jobs,” is what one of my wealthy classmates from Chicago shared with me after one of my wonderful Sociology classes on a fine spring day. The topic of discussion in the class that day was, “Can a Meritocracy exist in a Democracy?” The things one discusses at the age of 19.

“You can’t Educate Everyone Because Someone has to do the Shit Jobs,” was a phrase that I remembered to this day. At the time I heard it, I thought it only pertained to people that had jobs that no one would really want. I would say jobs like garbage collection, cow killers at the meat plant, use your imagination, I don’t want to offend too many people. Many wonderful, hard working, good people have these jobs all over the world.

What changed in my mind over the years was, “What is a shit job?” This week, as you read this, I have come to the conclusion that a Shit Job is something that someone else will pay you to do because there is no way in hell that they would do it. Would you want to be the Director of Collections for the a major automobile manufacturer? That would most likely pay about $300,000 per year.

With this job you would spend thousands of hours collection past due accounts. That would mean you being in charge of repossessing millions of cars 24/7. Counting the companies money 24/7, the more cars repossessed, the better your weekends. You would pray to God every night for more repossessions.

Is that a shit job?

Enjoy, “You can’t Educate Everyone Because Someone has to do the Shit Jobs.”
